Radon and its health effects

radon is one of the naturally occurring gas with radioactive powers. It constantly emits radioactive rays that spread around. Radon comes into being after the radioactive decay of uranium, radium, and thorium, which mean these emit radioactive rays and get converted into radon. Radon, Rn, is usually found in soil and the lowermost areas of buildings and homes like basements are the major reservoirs. The dust particles are then spread in the atmosphere carrying radon and its rays with it.

Lung cancer and radon:

The question is what the danger of radon and why we are afraid of it? This belongs to the harmful and health-damaging effects of radon to the human being. Radon has been proved to cause cancer in the people who are exposed to it. Recent studies have shown that radon exposure is one of the main causes of lung cancer. Among smokers, it is the second most common cause of carcinoma of lung whereas, among non-smokers, it is the most common cause. This is indeed alarming that we are exposed to such a harmful agent all the time without us knowing. The mechanism includes the inhalation of radioactive particles which in turn causes the damage to the lining of the cells in the lung. Also, it is said that radon can cause other cancers like leukaemia i.e. blood cancer.

Radon levels:

Although no levels of radon are safe for human health, the Environmental Protecting Organization has still determined some ranges in this regard. The safe levels of radon are considered to be less than 4 picocuries per litre. Any levels above this will cause damaging effects on human health.

Also, the effects of radon do not occur spontaneously, it takes years to develop lung cancer after radon exposure. Duration of radon exposure also matters. Short-term exposure to radon might not affect the person, however, if you are exposed to radon for a long duration, it will act as a carcinogen.

Radon protection:

“Radon”is a colorless, tasteless and invisible odorless gas present in the soil and emitting radioactive rays all the time around us. Earlier the technology was not advanced to detect the presence of radon or to measure its levels. With the recent advancements in technology and industry, such devices have been formulated which are sensitive to radon. These devices measure the levels of this radioactive gas and determine whether you are at risk of radon exposure or not. Also, there are instruments and devices designed to eliminate the radon gas from your homes and buildings. These machines are installed at your place in the basement area. First, they detect the levels of radon in your home, if there is radon risk, and then other machines are placed. These works by sump and pump action, suck out the excessive radon gas and release into the atmosphere to get diluted. These are radon protection mechanism and you can contact any reliable company to get these servicesof radon testing and mitigation.
